Morning Departure and Early Stops
Te Anau to Te Anau Downs
We begin our day with an early departure from Te Anau, always leaving by 9:00 am. This early start ensures we stay ahead of the crowds at the initial stops along the road to Milford Sound.

If you’re self-driving, you should also plan for an early morning departure to enjoy a quieter road and more peaceful experiences at each viewpoint.
Our first stop is Te Anau Downs, approximately 20 minutes from Te Anau. This brief 5-minute stop provides an opportunity to stretch before officially entering Fiordland National Park.
On clear days, the view across Lake Te Anau to the Murchison Mountains and Middle Fiord of the lake offers an excellent photo opportunity. This stop is also beneficial for travellers prone to motion sickness, providing an early chance to reorient before the more winding road sections ahead.
Eglinton Valley

Continuing along the Milford Road, we soon reach Eglinton Valley, an expansive glacially-carved valley that stretches for 50km, flanked by steep mountains and filled with golden tussock.
We typically spend about 10 minutes here, enjoying the mountain air and dramatic views.
Timing is crucial at this location. By 10:30am, this area becomes significantly busier with tour groups from Queenstown, affecting both the peaceful atmosphere and photo opportunities, so it’s best to get here early.

Mirror Lakes

Mirror Lakes offers one of the route's most popular photo stops. The boardwalk leads you on an easy stroll through bird-filled native forests to still ponds. On calm days, the waters reflect a perfect mirror image of the surrounding Earl Mountains.
We recommend spending approximately 15 minutes here, which allows time to capture your photos and enjoy the surroundings and wildlife.
Again, an early departure from Te Anau ensures you can enjoy this spot before the larger crowds arrive, allowing a more peaceful experience.

Knobs Flat
This practical stop provides the last flushing toilets before Milford Sound, making it an essential break in the journey. While primarily functional, Knobs Flat also offers beautiful views across the road to the Eglinton River with mountain backdrops.
We typically spend about 5 minutes here before continuing our journey.
Bonus Stop
During our tours, we include a special stop near the Eglinton River at a peaceful location where Luxe Tours owners, Toby and Katelyn, have spent time fishing and enjoying family outings.
For visitors looking to discover this spot, we're happy to share the location information via email or message.

Nature Walk Options and Mid-Morning Stops
Optional Nature Walks
Depending on the day and group preferences, we choose between two nature walk options once we move on from Kobs Flat:
Lake Gunn Nature Walk: This 20-minute loop track is the easier option of the two walks, with the track remaining flat throughout the walk. The winding track takes you through native beech forest with several points where you can step off the track and look out over the lake. Located near the beautiful Cascade Creek campsite, this area also makes an ideal spot to combine with a morning tea break.
Marian Falls Walk: Slightly more challenging but still manageable for most visitors, this 25-30 minute return walk leads to viewing platforms overlooking tumbling waterfalls. For those who prefer not to walk, the area near the car park offers impressive views of the Hollyford River from a swing bridge.
Christie Falls Bridge
This brief stop showcases the power of water as it thunders under a bridge and into the Hollyford River. Particularly impressive on rainy days, the waterfall creates a refreshing spray that can be felt from the viewing area. We typically spend around 10 minutes here.
Monkey Creek
This glacier-fed creek offers crystal-clear drinking water straight from the alpine source, surrounded by steep mountain scenery. The area is home to rare blue ducks and is often frequented by kea (alpine parrots). We spend about 10 minutes at this stop. If you’re here between 11:30 am-12 pm, it can become very crowded when the wave of Queenstown tours comes through.

If the main Monkey Creek stop is crowded, numerous unsigned pullover areas nearby offer similar views with fewer people. Whenever you’re pulling off the road, make sure you indicate with enough warning for the traffic behind you.
Important Note: If you see Kea Parrot while here, they may approach you, but do not touch or feed them as this disrupts their natural behaviour and can make them sick.
Homer Tunnel
This 1.2km Homer Tunnel cuts through the Darran Mountains and operates on a traffic light system. Waiting times can vary from immediate passage to several minutes, which we factor into our tours. If you’re self-driving allow at least 8 minutes of buffer time in your travel plans to account for having to wait at a red light. If you do have to wait, you’ll have a bonus of more time for the stunning views and perhaps spot a curious kea hopping along the roadside.

Final Approach to Milford Sound
Cleddau Valley Lookout
After emerging from Homer Tunnel, this viewpoint overlooks the winding road descending into Milford Sound with steep, forested cliffs on either side. The scene is particularly dramatic in the rain when the cliffs are covered in waterfalls. As this stop can become congested, we sometimes save it for the way back as one final scenic stop to cap off the day.

Critical Timing for Self-Drivers
For self-drivers, this marks an important planning point. From exiting the Homer Tunnel, you should allow 40 minutes of buffer time before your cruise departure. This buffer accommodates parking challenges and the walk to the cruise terminal.
We’ve seen many people miss or have to run to their cruise because they haven’t factored in parking time. While tour groups have the advantage of direct terminal drop-off, you must factor this potential delay into your plans if you’re self-driving.
The main parking area, which requires a 10-minute walk to the cruise terminal, often fills quickly. When this happens, you'll need to backtrack to the overflow parking area, adding a 25-minute walk to reach your cruise.

Why We Choose a 1:00pm Cruise
Our tours include a cruise at around 1:00pm, which we've found creates the perfect balance in the day's schedule. This timing allows:
A relaxed, quiet morning on the road to enjoy the key Milford Road stops
Completion of the most scenic parts of the journey before fatigue sets in
Optimal energy levels for enjoying the cruise experience
A comfortable return journey with natural light for most of the drive
If you choose an earlier cruise time, you'll need to plan your itinerary to include most stops on the return journey to Te Anau. Conversely, a later cruise means potentially driving back in fading light or darkness, especially outside summer months.
Post-Cruise Return Journey
By the time your cruise concludes, you'll be 6-7 hours into your day and likely feeling quite tired. We often find our guests like to have a nap in the van on the way back to Te Anau.
On the drive back to Te Anau, we may stop briefly at Cleddau Valley Lookout if we didn't visit earlier. Pop's View is another nice lookout spot for the return trip if you’d like an additional stop on the way out.
We always make another stop at Knobs Flat for the toilets before completing the journey back, typically arriving back in Te Anau at approximately 5:30pm.
For self-drivers, it's important to plan rest breaks if needed, as fatigue becomes a significant safety factor on the return journey.
Typical Tour Inclusions
While offerings vary between operators, most guided tours include:
Accommodation pick up
Planned itinerary
Photo stops
Commentary about the region's history, geology, and wildlife
Convenient drop-off directly at the cruise terminal
Optional lunch add-on
Morning tea or refreshments (depending on the operator)
Our additional amenities at Milford Sound Luxe Tours include a drink bottle to take home, a morning tea muffin, tea and coffee, lollies, hand warmers in colder months, and umbrellas and towels as needed.
Top 5 Self-Driving Tips
1. Timing is crucial: Depart Te Anau by 9:00 am to avoid the main crowds and allow buffer time for stops.
2. Prioritise safety: Plan frequent rest breaks, ensure the driver has opportunities for stopping to safely view scenery, and don't rush if you're running behind schedule.
3. Pack provisions: Purchase food in Te Anau before departing as options in Milford Sound are limited. Check if your cruise includes meal options.
4. Fuel up in Te Anau: The Milford Sound fuel station is small, expensive, and occasionally runs out of fuel, so fill up in Te Anau before you leave.
5. Allow parking time: Allow 40 minutes buffer time after exiting the Homer Tunnel before your cruise. The main parking area fills quickly and requires a 10-minute walk, while overflow parking can add 25 minutes of walking time.
Whether self-driving or joining a guided tour, the journey to Milford Sound is as memorable as the destination itself. This itinerary represents what we've found to be the optimal balance of timing, stopping points, and pace for a day trip from Te Anau to Milford Sound.
The key to a successful Milford Sound visit lies in early departure, strategic timing, and realistic expectations about the day's length.
By planning your stops thoughtfully and booking your cruise time to complement your journey, you'll experience the best of this world-renowned destination without the stress of rushed timing or missed opportunities.
FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do a hike and a Milford Sound cruise in one day?
While possible, combining a substantial hike with a cruise creates a very long day. The most common longer hikes in the area are the following:
Milford Track Day Walk: This is an easy section of the Milford Track, requiring 1.5 hours return walk plus a 10-minute water taxi. Book a morning water taxi (earliest is 8:30am), and book an afternoon cruise (around 3 pm).
Key Summit Hike: Moderately difficult, 3-hour return hike. Possible after a cruise but will contribute to fatigue for the drive back to Te Anau.
Lake Marian Hike: Moderately challenging 3-4 hour return hike with uneven terrain. Only recommended for very fit visitors if you plan on combining it with a cruise.
For most visitors, we recommend sticking to the shorter Milford Road walks (e.g. Lake Gun and Marian Falls nature walks) if you’re doing a day trip and Milford Sound cruise. This avoids excessive fatigue on the drive back, which can affect both enjoyment and safety.
When should I leave Te Anau for Milford Sound?
For a 1:00-1:30 pm cruise: Depart by 9:00 am at the latest. This allows time to enjoy the scenic stops while staying ahead of the main crowds that arrive after 10:00 am.
For later afternoon cruises: You can leave a bit later, but remember that traffic increases significantly after 10:00 am. Regardless of your cruise time, allow at least 4 hours between departure from Te Anau and your cruise time if you want to experience the key stops and avoid rushing.
For morning cruises: If you've booked an early cruise, you'll likely need to drive directly to Milford Sound and save the stops for your return journey. The direct drive takes about 2 hours without stops, but allow at least 2.5 hours for safety and to avoid rushing.
What if it rains when I go to Milford Sound?
Milford Sound is one of the wettest places you can visit in New Zealand, so you should be prepared for rain and always bring a waterproof layer with you. Rain actually enhances the Milford Sound experience, creating hundreds of temporary waterfalls down the cliffs. Many visitors find the moody, misty atmosphere even more magical than clear conditions.
