A Rich Maritime History
The TSS Earnslaw's story begins in 1912, a year that would become famous in maritime history as the year of the Titanic’s ill-fated journey. On 18 August 1912, the Earnslaw, named after Mt Earnslaw at the head of Lake Wakatipu, was launched to begin her long service on the lake.
Initially commissioned by New Zealand Railways, the Earnslaw became an essential link between the isolated farming communities surrounding Lake Whakatipu.
Working alongside her sister ships - the paddle steamers Antrim and Mountaineer, and the screw steamer Ben Lomond - she transported sheep, cattle, and passengers to the surrounding high country stations, earning her affectionate nickname "Lady of the Lake" through years of faithful service.
The vessel's history nearly came to an end in 1968 when she was faced with scrapping.
However, fate intervened when Fiordland Travel (now known as RealNZ) leased her in 1969 and subsequently purchased her in 1982, marking the beginning of her transformation into the tourism icon we know today.
Preservation and Restoration
In 1984, the Earnslaw underwent a major refit that would secure her future while preserving her historical integrity. Her impressive 12-metre-high funnel was painted the distinctive bright red color that has become her trademark, while her hull was transformed to a pristine white.
The original kauri timber decks were protected with glass coverings, balancing preservation with practicality.
Today, visitors can still experience the authentic workings of this genuine steamship. The engine room remains a highlight of the journey, where the original steam engines continue to operate in full view, providing both warmth and a rhythmic soundtrack to the voyage.
Royal Connections and Cultural Impact
The Earnslaw's prestigious passenger list includes multiple members of royal families. In March 1990, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip enjoyed a cruise aboard the vessel. Other royal passengers have included the Emperor and Empress of Japan, the Prince of Thailand, and the King and Queen of Belgium.
The vessel's impact extends beyond tourism into cultural spheres. In 1984, famous composer Ron Goodwin was so inspired by the rhythmic sound of the Earnslaw's engines that he created the "Earnslaw Steam Theme" as part of his New Zealand Suite, capturing the vessel's distinctive heartbeat in musical form.
RealNZ: Guardians of Heritage
The TSS Earnslaw's operations are managed by RealNZ, a family-owned tourism company with deep roots in the region, beginning operations in 1954. Based in Queenstown, RealNZ (previously known as Fiordland Travel, then Real Journeys) has been a cornerstone of South Island tourism for generations, maintaining a commitment to preserving and sharing the region's natural and cultural heritage.
The preservation of the TSS Earnslaw stands as a testament to RealNZ's commitment to maintaining New Zealand's heritage. The company has grown from its early days as Fiordland Travel while maintaining its dedication to authentic tourism experiences.
RealNZ’s dedication to maintaining the TSS Earnslaw in her original steam operation reflects their broader commitment to authentic tourism experiences. This preservation of history allows visitors to step back in time while enjoying modern comfort and safety standards.
